Congo Landslides-Urgent Response Request

January 11, 2024 Midweek Musings - In the wake of a free and peaceful election (incumbent Felix Tshisekedi was re-elected), where hopes have been running high, they were soon subdued by terrible rain storms. On Tuesday in Kananga, the night after Christmas, it poured rain all night and by morning severe flooding had caused huge ravines and landslides of homes into them. Many other mud brick homes were destroyed. A total of 32 deaths have been reported, including 2 whole families. At least 5 churches in Kananga Presbytery are in danger of collapsing, including 3 who have sister church relationships with several of our churches, Rain is still falling and more disasters are to come.

In response, we are setting up an account to receive funds for disaster relief. To donate, go to our NCP Congo Partnership donation page and click on the new account titled “Landslide Repair and Prevention” OR you can send a check payable to New Castle Presbytery earmarked “Congo Partnership: Landslide Repair and Prevention” and send to 560 People’s Plaza, #240, Newark, DE. 19702. Because of the urgency, please send your donation by January 17. Funds will help with short term emergency relief, i.e. drains, bags and plants, and aid to victims, and longer term recovery.

And please keep our brothers and sisters in Congo in your prayers. Dirt roads are now turned to mud and travel in and around the city is near impossible, which impacts food and other supplies. Thank you.

Laurie Loveless, convener, Congo Partnership
