Thresholds

December 8, 2023 Presbytery Pause - If you search for the meaning of the word “threshold,” you’ll get something like what I got from dictionary.com:

  • the sill of a doorway.

  • the entrance to a house or building.

  • any place or point of entering or beginning: the threshold of a new career.

  • Also called limen. Psychology, Physiology. the point at which a stimulus is of sufficient intensity to begin to produce an effect: the threshold of consciousness; a low threshold of pain.

This season is a threshold, the place where the new liturgical year begins with Advent, followed quickly by a new calendar year. Every year we’re reminded of the amazing lengths God went to in order to become closer with us, crossing the threshold from divinity to humanity, from life to death, from death to resurrection. There are so many thresholds in the story of our faith, and we are invited to mark them in the turning of the seasons.
